Meaning Behind Favorite Names

Our top boy name is Merrick Rainier. Ever remember learning that on the Mayflower there was a baby named Oceanus born? Oceanus had a big brother named Giles Hopkins and a big sister named Constance Hopkins. Giles' daughter married William Merrick. Their family descended into DH's mom's side. My mother descends from one of Constance's daughters. DH and I are actually 11th cousins. I also like Merrick because my brothers' names are Matthew and Eric. Rainier is for my paternal grandfather Ray, the first pilot in our family, and who I enjoyed writing letters to as a child. After marrying Marshall, I found out that his grandmother Bermuda was named after the island because her parents wanted to name her after a beautiful place they always wanted to visit. Ironically, Mt. Rainier in Washington is one of my favorite places on the planet. :)

Our top girl name is Holly Annabelle. DH wanted to honor his mother, whose name is Joy. She loves Christmas because she likes seeing her name on everything. I'm a December baby, and we came up with Holly as a way of honoring Joy without duplicating the name or going with Joyce. Annabelle is a smooched way of honoring many people. My mother's middle name is Ann; my grandmother and great-great-grandmother, whose wedding ring I have, were both Anna. The 'b' is for Bermuda and Barbara, our grandmothers. The "-elle" is for my sister and myself as our middle names are Danielle and Michelle.
